2Box vs. Dm10 Pro

Hey gang, new to this forum!  I do not own a 2Box yet but did take one home for a week to try out(wasn't ready to buy).
I'm trying to decide which kit is best for me, the 2Box or the Dm10 pro.
Firstly, I loved the 2Box but the snare sounds leave a lot to be desired(very important to me)...the toms, unmatched.
The pads, quite nice, the cymbals...nice too.  The choke feels and sound more real than others. However no effects/reverb.  I understand this may be expected in a different update.
The DM10 however is a)cheaper b)effects built in c)easy to get additional cymbals/pads d)backed by a big company
However I won't be able to try it as I did with the 2Box.  Terrified I will order it and be sorely disappointed and end up taking it back for the 2Box....long story short...somebody help push me over the fence.  Anybody have any experience with both kits?
thanks ev

I have heard demo's of the DM10 and have to say purely based on the sounds I don't think its quite a pro level instrument.  But its not fair to judge it head to head with a 2Box or Roland kit as they cost a lot more money.  Last I checked the DM10 pro pack (which does include some nice surge cymbals) was around £900 retail (£699 for the DM10 standard kit), so its like only 2 thirds the price of say a 2Box or Roland TD-9kx.  Based purely on the sounds I would avoid the DM10 and spend more money on a Roland/Yammy/2Box kit because there is a real difference in sound quality (again this is my personal opinion, I have only played Roland and 2Box gear, never tried a Yammy or DM10 but heard a few demo's).

Here's a decent video of the DM10:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNGVSMFk7ww&feature=related

So really it depends on your budget - if you can afford around £1500 get a 2Box or TD-9kx or equivalent Yammy kit.  If not then the DM10 pro kit is definitely a viable option - certainly the hardware looks good for the price, nice pads with working rims, surge cymbals and a solid rack.

Thanks for your input.  I think you are right about the sounds however the dm10 comes with some pretty nice features.  Here in Vancouver, Canada the 2box is only 400 dollars more than the dm10 so the price really isn't an issue.  I've owned a TD9KX and played it for a year or so, it wasn't bad, but I guess I'd be disappointed if the dm10 really only compared to that.  Cuz if that's as good as the dm10 gets then it's a no brainer to go with the 2box.  I think the weaker snare sounds is really what's putting me off the 2box right now.  How can they be improved?  Can you make custom kits with the 2box?

First of all, you can customize the sound (a bit) with the new layer function. Also play with the tunings. Some snares sound better (or worser) at a different tuning. Then, you can load every snare sound into the 2box with the editor. It's an open system. The editor isn't fully finished by now, but it will be soon.

I was disappointed when Alesis came out with this kit and even more disappointed when Pearl adapted their module. How can 2 companies with such a large status sell such a moderate drum machine, after seen what other companies (yes even Roland) do, and what they (esp Alesis) have learned from the last 20 years.

Thanks putt...I too was shocked to find out Pearl's red box was the same thing as the dm10, what are they thinking?  I can't imagine they are selling many of those kits..what they should do is sell the system that attaches to your regualr drums, that would be worth looking into, and of course develop their own module.
Can you eleborate on the "load every snare sound into the 2box.."  I'm an idiot when it comes to computers vst etc..

Well the 2Box has 4GB of flash memory onboard, which means there is quite a lot of space for samples.  You can create and load your own samples into the module, so if you aren't impressed with the snares you can make your own!  Just plug the module into your PC via USB, and you can copy on/delete any sounds you like.

The redbox only has 128Mb when compared to the 2Box's 4Gb, so although it can hold its own samples, the DM10 can't hold as many or as high quality as 2Box can.

Although the DM10 module isn't brilliant, the hardware pack for the DM10 is quite good - you could easily use it as a midi trigger to trigger BFD2 or EZDrummer etc from your PC.  It has 12 inputs too.  But really sound wise the 2Box is way better and that is where my money would go.  Do be prepared to replace some bits of hardware though, like the snare stand and hi-hat clutch - the kit plays much better with proper hardware...

Hi Guys

Just thought I would let you know. We have been working very hard in the back ground and there is a new stand coming. Personally I thought the stand we had designed was a work of art, considering most companies just get them of the shelf, we didn't. We wanted to provide our customer with the full kit, as though you were part of something special. Let me tell you, the new stand is brilliant, almost industrial.
To provide this new stand it has cost more money. As you all know raw material prices have gone through the roof, so unfortunately the next version with the new stand will cost more, but you won't be disappointed. So everyone that bought the kit with the first stand have got a bargain. Everyone that buys the kit with new stand should be delighted. When you see the kit with the new stand you will realise there really isn't any competiton for this kit at this price. We are going to try and get some pictures up on the 2Box website in the next few days

Great news for all especially prospective buyers.  I have some questions:

  • How much of a price increase over the original package are we talking about?
  • Will there be some sort of rebate for first time buyers who have the original rack and want to upgrade (like me  ;))?
  • Any idea when we might see the rubber pads with positional sensing capability?  The new yamaha pads for the DTX are getting a lot of praise, if they are anything like that I can see them being a big hit...

Where do I get these snare samples? Oceanwave(or like it)? How much do they cost?  Do they work as well as the 2box's own sounds(dynamically)
Ya the snare stand set up is a bit dodgy, but of little importance to me.  As long as I can play they thing I'm pretty easily satisfied.  The hit hat seemd passable to me.  But if they are putting something else together then great!!
