Halted cymbal sounds

Good morning,

as mentioned in other threads i am using two Milleniums MPS200 cymbals at the Tom 4 Input. But there is the problem that crash sounds are sometimes halted. It occurs quite often at one of the two cymbals. At the other one i heard it only once. Sometimes i can play for a long time without any halted sounds but sometimes one out of three hits is halted. Here are two sound files with several hits on the two cymbals:

Does anybody have similar problems? I swapped the inputs for the cymbals but the problem remains on the same cymbal-pad. So i guess there is something wrong with the pad. Do you also think it is caused by a faulty cymbal or just an issue of trigger settings?

Trigger setting for both pads are:

Curve: Norm
Gain: 0
Thres: -36
Type: Cym12

No, I do not have this problem at all.  These cymbals you are using, they are not 2Box cymbals right?  You said they were Millenium or something.  Either the cymbal isn't compatible, the cymbal/cable is faulty or the settings are wrong.

  • So firstly, are you sure the cymbal is compatible?  Perhaps contact Millenium to ask?
  • Secondly, if you find the module inputs are not at fault, did you try different cables too?
  • Have you tried changing the Type to other settings like Cym14 or AcTr1/2/3 etc?
  • Make sure the Attack is 0 and the Decay is 100 to get the full sample
  • Make sure the Input for that cymbal is set to stereo under the UNIT\OUT page and that it is assigned to the cymbal group

Perhaps the sample or channel is panned and you are missing one side but aside from these things I can't think of anything else except turning the choke facilty off to see if that makes a difference.

This is part of the voice stealing problem mentioned in another thread. Although very intermittent, I can recreate the exact same phenomenon using 2Box cymbals as well as 2Box drum pads.

Do you think this 'voice stealing' is a problem with the module or O/S?  Only asking becasue I have not encountered this problem ever on my kit and I have had different software versions on it - how can I try to recreate it?

When this happens, do you have the kit saved and you are not in a config menu?  Only saying this because the kit does not trigger properly when you are in the config or UNIT page or changing kit sounds, but this is normal I think.  Things need to be saved first before normal operation resumes.

Good morning,

to determine whether it is this "voice stealing" problem i recorded a new track. I thought "voice stealing" only cuts rim sounds when pad sounds are played. In this new track i only played the cymbal pad which is connected to the rim input of tom 4 and nothing else. I didn't even touch one of the other pads. Furthermore i waited about 6 seconds until the next beat but the problem is still there:

As you can hear there are several click-sounds in this track for example on the third hit. So i listened to the sound file that i use for this cymbal which is "AZ 18 Crash.dsnd". In the following screenshot you can see that these clicks are related to a very quiet sample. I marked it in this screenshot:

http://www.4shared.com/photo/jS6eT5nx/Screenshot-AZ_18_Crash.html

So i guess it could also be a problem with multiple triggers because i only played strong hits but very quite sample-sounds are played. Maybe the output voltage of the Millenium pads is too high for the 2Box-Brain.

Later on i will also try other settings at the brain but now i have to do some other things  :D.

I'm using one Millenium MPS400 cymbal pad - stereo version with choke, no problem so far.

Which input do you use for the Millenium cymbal? Since it has two zones and choke i guess one of the cymbal-inputs?!

correct, cymbal input # 3

Hi,

after a few weeks without drumming (business trip and vacation) i could carry on with that issue. The problem seems to be a combination of multiple triggers with limited polyphony. Sometimes there are so much trigger events that the module stops playing the first (loud) sound and plays quiet sounds. When i touch the cymbal with two fingers there is only one trigger event and every thing is fine. Setting the curve to Neg2 and Thres to -25 avoids the problem but there are still up to 4 trigger events by a single hit. I think i will try to change something at the cymbal-pad to avoid multiple triggers.
